As parents, we inspire our children to do their best and dream high. We understand that not all children can become doctors, surgeons, lawyers, accountants or any other high flying professionals, we just want them to enjoy whatever path they decide to follow.
My eldest son, at 14, knows he wants to go into the computing sector. My middle son, now 12, isn’t sure but enjoys science and maths. My youngest son, 9 years old, is forever changing his mind, which is understandable at his age. He’s gone from wanting to be a gamer, a security guard, a shop keeper and even a teacher. But his reasons for picking these career paths is what really makes me laugh.
This was one of his funniest options…
He came running to me so excited one day
Mummy, mummy, I know what I want to be when I grow up.
I couldn’t wait to hear what he had come up with this time
Go on then, what is it?
I want to be a COWBOY!
Now I know how important it is to never discourage your child’s dreams so I went along with it.
Wow, that would be so cool… Maybe you could even move to America and open up a ranch?
He looked a bit deflated by my comment, not sure why.
There was silence for a few moments before he replied
I don’t want to move to America…
I don’t want to open a ‘branch’…
… Can I just get a cowboy hat then?!!!
I don’t want to move to America either! (Sorry American family)
