Reoccurring darkness

I wake up in a bundle on the cold hard floor.

For a minute I can’t move. I can’t see. I can’t swallow this lump in the back of my throat.

I stretch out my hands to help support my body as I lift myself up from the ground but they feel frozen solid. Ignoring the stinging pain cascading through every inch of my being, I manage to get to my feet.

Why is it so cold? Why is it so dark? … Where am I?

I try to recall the moments leading up to the present but my mind is blank, there’s nothing! My head is pounding. It’s so loud! It’s making my ears ring with pain! It’s torture… it’s… it’s not ringing in my head, something is actually ringing! Somewhere in the darkness, something is shrilling repeatedly. Is it getting closer? It’s getting louder so it must be getting closer. I need to run!

Using every bout of energy I can cluster, I start to run away from the sound. The darkness is all around me and the sound is echoing everywhere making it hard to determine which direction I need to go in. Still I keep going. My legs ache, my knees feel as if they are trying to seize up and my toes are ice cubes refusing to melt. But I keep running and running and running…

Surely there is an end to this darkness. It’s this hope that keeps me strong. Just a glimmer of light to see where I am, to work out what the sound is that is continuously following me. Please, let me reach the light!

My silent prayers are left unheard. My mind can no longer control my body, it gives in. I crumble to the frozen slab below me with a thump! The ringing is closing in around me, almost as if it is coming from every direction at once. I clasp my hands around my ears as tight as possible in an attempt to block out the sound.

Please someone help me! Please! Please God, release me from this nightmare!

My eyes close and I tumble into the darkness of my mind…

Startled, I awake! I stretch out my arms and legs waiting for the pain to kick back in but it doesn’t. I feel warm. My body feels rested. Is it over?

NO! I can still hear that sound! That ringing is even louder than before! Unwillingly I pry my eyes open…

Suddenly it all becomes clear…

I realise where I am…

I realise what the sound is…

And I realise what I must do…

It’s morning, my alarm is ringing and I must get out of bed!!!

Wow this was riveting. Lately I have not been remembering my dreams. Yet when I do have they are very clear. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever had a recurring dream.

Wait!!! I used to dream of falling but I always woke up before I reached the ground. So I did have a recurring dream, but that was a long time ago.

I remember having that dream too. Someone told me that if you actually hit the ground in your dream, it means you’ve passed on for real 😦 😬 … I wonder…
