Rude words

My son’s current topic at school brought back a memory…

I’m assisting in a year 5 classroom and the term topic is ‘space’. Most of the children know the planet names already but we keep repeating them to help those who need extra help.

Me: So class, let’s name the planets in order closest from the sun.

Class: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus (giggle, giggle and whole class is in hysterics)

Girl in class: (not impressed with class laughter) Why is everybody being so childish?

Boy in class: (still giggling) Because it sounds like something rude.

Girl in class : (still not impressed) What because Uranus sounds like ‘urine’? that’s not rude.

Class: (all in fits of laughter now except girl who doesn’t understand the commotion)

Me: Ok, that’s enough. Let’s settle back down.

Boy in class: Not urine, it sounds like ‘your anus’ !!!

Class: (all laughing again but girl is mortified!)

All I could do to get a handle on the situation is send boy out of the class to calm down and threaten the rest of the class with a visit to the heads office if I heard another giggle. It worked.

What I really wanted to do was laugh with the class and for the girl to loosen up and laugh as well… but that wouldn’t make me a good role model, would it?

My son asked me why children in his class keep giggling when they say Uranus. At first I was going to act dumb and say I didn’t know. That’s when I remembered this story and decided to tell him the ‘rude’ word it sounds like… I then had to tell him what an ‘anus’ is!

And so the giggling begins! πŸ˜†πŸ˜‚πŸ€£πŸ€ͺ

Thing is, if you try to hide your kids from life experiences, they end up not knowing how to cope with them when they finally do run into them. So while you may not want to teach your kids to swear (taking the example a bit further), it’s good to teach them what the words are, why we don’t use them in polite company and how to brush off said words when they’re heard.

True! Especially considering that they hear swearing everywhere nowadays! I know my elder 2 boys swear but I’ve told them I never want to hear it around me, around their mates I don’t mind but I don’t want them to swear in every sentence!
