When I think back to my childhood, I remember a drink my mum would make us as a special treat. My parents were very strict with sugar intake so chocolate, sweets & fizzy drinks were a once-a-week delight to look forward to. As was this…
Coke mixed with milk!
And not any milk but gold top, full fat, milk. Mixed in equal portions and blitzed in the blender with ice! Delicious! The week would feel so long as I would be waiting anxiously for the days to pass and Sunday to arrive so I could indulge in this marvel of an invention. 😋
Funny thing is, I tried it a little while ago and couldn’t stomach it! In fact, it gave me a belly ache! The only difference between my recipe and my mum’s, was the milk used. Instead of gold top (which is hard to come by nowadays), I used blue top, could that make such a huge difference? Or is it the simple saying – nothing tastes as good as your mum’s cooking?
Baffling….

Another strange thing – my cooking tastes nothing like my mums! Even if I follow her recipes to a tee and considering I’ve learnt to cook from her, something is always different… Again, is it just mum’s cooking? Is the special ingredient – Mum’s LOVE?
Very Baffled!
What do you guys think? Do you believe your mother’s cooking is the best? Or can you match her in the kitchen?
Also, I would love to hear about any special recipes you remember from your childhood. Maybe it’s still your favourite or like me, maybe you can’t tolerate it anymore.
I look forward to hearing from you…
Suki… X!
Yes this is very true, the mother cooking is different! About me, I never loved homemade food in my childhood, I loved fast food and burger but I always ate what my mother cooked or prepared, my best ever is my mother’s “Tabbouleh” it’s kind of a salad but famous in Lebanon, ,my mother do it the best! Also the Lebanese coffee, I drink it in many places but I prefer my mother’s coffee 🙂 Thank you for sharing and just stick to the milk your mother used to use hahah and remember for your kids, you’re the best chef as well 😉

Mum would make an unbelievable suet pudding. Never did find out how. We always had home cooked stuff, never fast food. It was virtually always neat with 2 or 3 types of vegetables. When I left home went fast food mad. If it’s ok I might give that coke mix a miss….

Imagine a really soft sticky pastry with meat, vegetables and gravy inside. Almost dumpling like…You have to boil it if I remember right. Not very heathy….

For me I feel like if you have kids you will end up having your own style of cooking that they will love, you will forver love your own mums cooking but not be able to replicate it fully and your kids will forever love your cooking and still never be able to replicate it.❤

I agree… I also think other people cooking always tastes better than your own – or maybe that’s because we would rather somebody else cooks? 😂

I think for me after I’m done cooking or who ever is cooking we feel like we hate food cause we have had to cook it for hours if it’s a big meal and we just get sick of seeing it but when it’s someone else we love it because we didn’t have to do anything and it almost feels like a treat whereas for yourself cooking its almost like a chore unless that’s your job, if you get what I mean 😌

I’m glad you liked it… I know during the summer you can now get coke floats in cafes & restaurants, it’s coke with a scoop of icecream on top! It’s very yummy! 😋

Suki, a couple of thoughts. I used to as a kid have coca-cola with vanilla ice cream. If I ate that today I would feel sick too! As for the food tasting better back when …. I know the food quality then is better then it is now. So many foods have become tasteless. It is so hard to find good quality food these days. I know we do our very best to do so.

I know that drink combination as a coke float, they serve it here in cafes during summer, delicious! 😋
And yes, I agree, the quality of food has changed so much, it’s a shame…

Yes! A coke float, that is what it is called. My mouth is watering just thinking about it, yet if I even had two teaspoons today I’d feel ill. And good luck finding GOOD food. Every time we go shopping it is a challenge. We stopped eating fish because what they were selling wasn’t even the correct fish. The last time we had fish, I remember it was like rubber and both hubby and I asked, What IS this?

Oh no that’s crazy! You would think, at least fish would be ok… 😧

Yep. You would think. I even avoid feeding my cats fish. It’s shocking what is going on and you just have to be so careful. Hubby actually watched a program that documented that some fish is NOT what the seller claims it to be. I know we are not going to be eating fish ….. and that includes tuna for me.

I am sure for your children, your cooking will be how your mom’s cooking is for you. Also, I never this mixture, hmm.

Being the son..I absolutely love mums cooking, irrespective how big or small it may be. I’ve tried doing the same things she does..but like u said, it just doesnt turn out the same way. Its probably the ‘special ingredient’ that only mums have.
I’m not a natural at cooking but I can whip up a decent meal for myself if needed (does not necessarily mean to fry an omlette n eat 🤣😂😜)

What do you mean? Omelettes the only thing I can cook as perfectly as my mum! 😂😂😂
I think me & you are on the same page… 👍❤

Mom got fried chicken right. She got so much praise for her fried chicken from us three boys, she took to cooking it twice a week sometimes during our teen years. She got one, maybe two other dishes right, too.
In my opinion, mom was wise, she was kind, she was strong, and she was many other things. But a cook, she was not.
Worst of all was her homemade spaghetti. She truly thought her self-created spaghetti, which called for a whole stick of butter in addition a generous amount of olive oil, was merely “rich” and not actually deadly. She would even serve it to guests. No one, family or guest, except her, could finish a full serving.
Mom was the CEO of a small business. She’d been hired because — this was “back in the day” — the business was failing and no man wanted on his resume that he’d been the last CEO of a failed business. It was thought ok to give her the job despite she was a woman because who else would be better to blame than a woman?
At first, she kept the sick thing alive. Then she turned it healthy. She made a profit five years after taking charge. She kept making profits every year afterwards.for 30 years until she retired.
But she just might have been the worst cook I’ve known.

That’s exactly how I feel. I’m sorry to say I didn’t always appreciate mom. Went full-blown “She’s crazy!” during my teen years. But I’ve talked with a whole lot of people since then about their moms. Many of them had moms so bad I don’t even tell them about mine — don’t want to make them feel that much worse. When you get lucky to have a good mom, you get lucky for your whole life.
Thank you for your kind compliments.

My Mom’s fish curry was the best in the world and her stir fried vegetables (which was always a bit burnt !!) I guess the taste comes from all the love Moms put into their cooking. Thank you for your post. Brings back good memories for me.
